A Canadian playlist

What do you know about Canada?

OK, you know how to sing "Oh, Canada". At school you learned that Toronto is the biggest Canadian city and also that Ottawa is the capital of the country. You might be thinking about polar bears, ice and low temperatures.

But what about Canadian music?

This post is about songs from Canadian singers and bands.

Nowadays, it's almost impossible to think about music in Canada and not think about Justin Bieber. Yeah, Bieber and his "beliebers" made the "baby, baby, baby" verse became an international hit. Some people love the Canadian singer, others hate him. But even with some different feelings about him, the teenager born in London, Ontario is one of the most famous celebrities.

The song "All Around The World" is from the third album of Bieber ("Believe"), and has tis the American rapper Ludacris.

Another famous Canadian artist is Michael Buble, who was born in Burnaby, British Columbia. Buble is a classical jazz and soul singer who has Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald as his major influences. He has won several awards (Grammy Awards, American Music Awards, Juno Awards, World Music Awards and many others) and his songs usually appear at the first positions of Billboard's lists.

A nice song to listen to is "Beautiful Day", from his new CD "To Be Loved". The song talks about a person who just breaks up with his/her girlfriend/boyfriend and feels happy about it. One verse says: "Because you may not believe / That baby, I'm relieved / When you said goodbye, my whole world shines".

Carly Rae Jepsen (Mission, British Columbia) has been a success with her song "Call Me Maybe". However, some people don't realize that she has other great songs, like "Good Time", a song from her and the American band Owl City. The melody is pretty cool and will make you feel like dancing.

Arcade Fire (Montreal, Quebec) is an indie band, famous for the album "The Suburbs". This CD, released in 2010, has fantastic songs. Five magazines chose "The Suburbs" as the best CD of that year. If you have never listened to the song with the same name of the album, your time is now.

"Welcome to my life". Yeah, I know you probably heard this verse in the past. Simple Plan (Montreal, Quebec) won lots of awards during the last decade and this song became very popular. It talks about problems teenagers sometimes have to face.

Avril Lavigne (Belleville, Ontario) is another Canadian artist. The singer and songwriter has sold more than 30 million albums and over 50 million singles worldwide. The song "Complicated" was the number one song in many countries a few years ago.

And now, time for some curiosities:

Did you know that...

... Michael Buble is also an actor? He played a role in "Totally Blond", "Duets", "The Snow Walker", "Las Vegas - Catch of the Day" and "Da Kath & Kim Code"

.... the members of Simple Plan have helped many organizations? Besides donating money for charity, they created their own foundation, which focuses on teen problems ranging from suicide to poverty.

Dragons will rule the world

Have you ever heard about Imagine Dragons? Their songs are on 10 out of 10 radios. Ben McKee, Dan Reynolds, Wayne Sermon and Dan Platzman are the members of this American indie band, that released their first album ("Night Vision") in 2012. The album is trending all over the world and the critics about it are excellent.

Billboard magazine listed them as "brightest new stars" and Rolling Stone Magazine chose their song "Radioactive" as the "best rock song of 2012".

Although "Radioactive" is the Imagine Dragons' most famous song, I will recommend another one, as good as their famous hit.

The song is called "It's Time", and listening to it you can realize how powerful the vocals are and the melody won't get out of your head for a few days (which is great!).

This video is an acoustic version (yeah, I love acoustic versions) of the song, and my tip is to pay attention to the violin, that only makes the song better.

Ladies and gentlemen, Imagine Dragons.

On music and iPods

Mr. Nietzsche once told us: "Without music, life would be a mistake"

Music is all around us. Music appears from the moment you wake up to the moment you go sleep. (And sometimes is even inside your deepest dreams).

When you listen to a really good song, your brain tells you to stop everything you are doing at that moment and enjoy some precious seconds.

This blog will give you some music suggestions, talking about old and new songs, great artists, cool music videos and everything else that you should have on your iPod.

Grab your headphones and enjoy!
